I finished this today October 28, 2023. The body is Slippery Elm, 11” wide. I only had one short board so this will be the last one I will ever make out of this elm. It has a rainbow prism hue of tones that reflect in the light and is a very hard wood. These trees caught a blight and are dying off. The ones around my house here in WV are all dead and falling down but I believe this one came from higher elevation in Elkins area. The quartersawn hard maple neck feels really good and has a V neck design. As far as I know I’m the only person making these with a V neck. Quarter sawn means the grain is straight up and down giving a lot of extra strength to the neck. All the wood was local WV products. The solid 4/4 ebony violin pegs are fit in holes made with two different violin peg reamers with one reamer being specially made for the 5th peg hole. This gives maximum friction fit and string retention. The finish I used boiled linseed oil with beeswax and used proper flathead screws with makes its historically accurate. Inside the hide is stretched over a vintage Maxwell house coffee tin and has a really good brisk an pleasant tone with medium gauge steel strings. I welcome any questions and have a look at my 100% positive feedback as I have been making these for around 20 years now but never had a website and no longer doing craft shows or music festivals. I pack this in a double ply cardboard box I custom make and use peanuts bubble wrap and duck tape. I guarantee this to play as it should. I make these with full inspiration to the foxfire book, Stanley hicks, Leonard Glenn and Frank Proffitt to continue their legacies and people like them who had to make do with what they had and survived some pretty hard times.
